American Gold Eagle Coins mark the 35th anniversary of the series in 2021 with two different releases of the BU and Proof coins. To start the 2021 production cycle, the US Mint issued the Gold Eagles with the original design combinations that are now known as Type 1 coins. With the release of Type 2 Gold Eagles, the US Mint embarks on a new future for the series by debuting its new reverse design of the bald eagle.

Jennie Norris is a graphic designer, illustrator, and fine artist who works with the United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program. Her design for the reverse of the American Gold Eagle was one of more than 30 taken into consideration to be the new reverse design for the series. It was chosen in mid-2020 to replace Miley Busieks long-running reverse image depicting the family of American bald eagles.
Obverse design elements on the 2021 1/4 oz Gold Eagle include the effigy of Liberty that was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This image was originally used on the $20 Double Gold Eagle Coin from 1907 to 1933. It features Liberty in front-facing relief with a large torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other hand.
