Despite its prominence, the sugar maple leaf’s status as a Canadian symbol has not been without controversy. There have been debates about whether the leaf should be modified or replaced, with some arguing that it does not adequately represent Canada’s diverse Indigenous and immigrant populations. However, the leaf’s enduring popularity and resonance with Canadians of all backgrounds suggest that it will likely remain a cherished national icon for years to come.
In the obverse design of the 2025 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is the all-new portrait of King Charles III. His Majesty is just the second monarch in the history of this program to feature on Maple Leaf Bullion Coins. This 2024 design from Steven Rosati depicts His Majesty in left-profile relief without a crown.
For the reverse side of 2025 1/10 oz Gold Maple Leaf Coins, the mint offers a glimpse of the sugar maple leaf. This design was created for the series in 1979 by Walter Ott and graces the reverse of all coins in the series, from all gold weights to the silver, platinum, and palladium versions of the coin
