20th year of issue in the American Gold Buffalo Series.
Contains 1 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold in BU condition.
The face value of $50 (USD) is fully backed by the US government.
On the obverse is a stoic indigenous figure. The reverse features the American bison.
The United States Mint was founded in 1792 with passage of the first-ever Coinage Act by the United States Congress. The mint began issuing coins at its Philadelphia Mint location in the years to come, but by 2006, some 214 years later, the US Mint had never issued a 24-karat gold coin.
On the obverse of the 2025 American Gold Buffalo Coin, the mint features James Earle Fraser’s bust of an indigenous figure. Captured with a stoic look on his face, this indigenous figure is the result of Fraser’s combination of the facial characteristics of three real-life tribal figures from the early 20th century in America.
The reverse side of the 2025 1 oz Gold Buffalo features another design from Fraser. This image captures an American bison standing on a small patch of dirt in left-profile relief. The bison’s head is lowered as it grazes on the grass from the mound. This design was inspired by Black Diamond, a bison living at the Central Park Zoo in the early 20th century.
