First issued in 1986 as the Australian Gold Nugget, the Perth Mint’s Australian Gold Kangaroo Series has long been a favorite among investors and collectors. In 1990, the series transitioned to its now-iconic kangaroo imagery, with each year’s coin presenting a new interpretation of Australia’s most recognizable marsupial. The 2026 release marks the 40th anniversary of this celebrated program and introduces a special anniversary privy mark to commemorate the milestone.

The obverse of every 2026 1/4 oz Gold Kangaroo Coin showcases King Charles III in left-profile relief, without a crown. This portrait, designed by Dan Thorne, represents the first official effigy of the monarch on Australian currency.
The reverse of the 2026 Australian Gold Kangaroo features two kangaroos moving through a shallow body of water, their leaps creating ripples as they go. This year’s design captures the grace and energy efficiency of the kangaroo’s iconic hopping motion, developed over millennia of evolution.
When European settlers arrived in 1788, kangaroos became both a curiosity and a challenge. Early colonists were astonished by these strange hopping creatures, and kangaroos quickly became Australia’s most distinctive export in terms of global imagery. However, as agriculture expanded, kangaroos were increasingly viewed as competitors for grazing land, leading to widespread culling that continues in modified forms today.
These 2026 1/4 oz Australian Gold Kangaroo Coins are available in Brilliant Uncirculated condition and arrive in protective acrylic capsules. The 1/4 oz gold coin has the second-lowest mintage cap at just 150,000 coins, 50,000 coins more than the 1/2 oz gold coin.
