The Royal Canadian Mint was established in 1908 as a branch of Britain’s Royal Mint, initially operating from a facility in Ottawa to produce Canadian coins domestically rather than having them struck in London. What began as a modest operation to mint gold sovereigns and Canadian silver coins has evolved into one of the world’s most innovative minting institutions, pioneering advanced security features like holographic technology.

The Royal Canadian Mint gained full independence from Britain in 1969, becoming a Crown corporation, and has since expanded to include a state-of-the-art facility in Winnipeg, which opened in 1976. Today, it not only produces Canada’s circulation coins but also creates collectible coins, bullion products, and medals for countries worldwide, establishing itself as a leader in numismatic artistry and anti-counterfeiting technology.
