The M2 Browning Machine Gun was designed by its namesake, John Browning, near the end of World War I. The Great War had seen the rise of machine gun use on the battlefield, and the United States Military found the need for a reliable heavy machine gun to replace those used in World War I.

The 50 caliber round for the M2 Browning were designed as 12.7x99mm NATO rounds and could be fired out of the M2 at a rate of 450 to 600 rounds per min. The effective firing range of the Browning machine gun was 2,000 yards with a maximum range of 2,700 yards.
