Chinese Silver Panda Coins have an interesting history between 1983 and 1988. The coins were first issued only as proof specimens and seemingly had an ever-changing weight and purity. For example, the purity of the coins varied in the early years from 90% silver to sterling silver, or 92.5% silver. It wasn’t until 1989 that the coins stabilized at 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver.
On the obverse of 2023 Chinese Silver Panda Coins, the mint features its static image in use since 1983. Here, the Temple of Heaven’s Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests is featured. This building is the most important in the Taoist religious complex and is shown from the exterior looking up the steps to the primary doors.
The reverse side of the 2023 30 Gram Silver Panda Coin comes with a new design for 2023. In this year’s design, two Giant Pandas are shown in and around a tree. One of the pandas has ascended high into the tree and is looking down to reach a paw out to its companion standing at the base near the trunk of the tree.
