The leaf design shown here was created in 1979 by Walter Ott for the debut of the Gold Maple Leaf and has remained consistent on the coins across the silver, platinum, and palladium variants.

As glacial periods advanced and retreated over millennia, sugar maples adapted to the temperate climate of what is now the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada.
