The South African Mints first release of a Silver Krugerrand came in 2017. The mint celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Gold Krugerrand in style that year issuing what it called a Premium Uncirculated Silver Krugerrand with a mintage of 1 million coins and a 1 oz proof silver version as well.

The first elected President of the South African Republic, Kruger had previously served in the Boer armies during the Boer Wars and then participated as a leader in the triumvirate that governed South Africa before the formation of the new republic.
