The earliest known coin featuring Britannia was issued by Roman Emperor Hadrian around 119-122 CE to commemorate his visit to the British province. These bronze sestertii depicted Britannia as a seated female figure, establishing the foundational iconography that would influence representations for centuries to come.

This version of the historic female personification of Britain was first created in 1987 by artist Philip Nathan. It presents Britannia in a dignified stance, dressed in flowing robes and wearing a Corinthian helmet. She holds a trident in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, which rests atop a shield bearing the Union Jack design.
