How I was watching a program on the History Channel Saturday Morning about the Thompson Sub Machine Gun, or “Tommy Gun,” as it came to be known. No one wanted it! It could shoot 800 rounds a minute, but neither the army nor police wanted it. Guess who thought it was marvelous? The rum runners and bootleggers, who were put in business by means of prohibition. America wanted to drink, but the Carey Nations and law makers said no. “Demon Rum” was outlawed, and the underworld was born. Now it’s drugs. I have never tried them, don’t know what they look like even, but I say they should be just as legal as they were when whiskey was illegal. You couldn’t drink, but you could go into any “drug” store and get whatever you wanted. If drugs were legalized today, the jails would be half as full as they are now, the underworld would have to depend on prostitution to make its living (which should also be legalized), and those foolish enough to drug themselves, would simply have to pay the consequences. Are they habit forming? I guess so, but so is alcohol, and the most addictive drug known to man is nicotine. Most of the traffic deaths are caused by alcohol, and it is said that 90% of non-arson fires are caused by smoking. Which is worse?
Think of the rich men and women who have no talent or education of any kind, but have the nerve to sell drugs. Get rich and have no talent…just nerve. If drugs were legalized, those wanting them could buy them for a tenth the price and the underworld would be out of business. The streets would be safe, and cities might recover. I know, this is outrageous to some, but I do not think that morality of any kind can be legislated. Millions have tried, but the oldest profession still flourishes, and drugs are still around. Why not give it up? Let people do as they please, as long as they do no harm to others.
