Congressional Approval

This was written by my son David

Recently, a study was done which showed that Americans disapprove of the job Congress is doing, by a 4 to 1 margin.  I suspect it’s been about that for decades, but the more I thought about it, the more aggravated I became.  Why?  because, even though 80% of us hate the job our congressman is doing, we will still vote for that person in the next election.

How is this possible?  Would we act this way if our mechanic kept gypping us?  Would we continue to dine at a restaurant, if the food and service were horrible?  Of course not!  Why then, do we continue to vote for the same losers who have gotten us into this mess?  I’m no psychologist, but I think it’s just plain ignorance.  Many of us have become so complacent that we just think it will work out.  No matter how obviously wrong that may sound to those of us who actually pay attention.

If you really drill down to the root cause of what ails this country, you will see that it’s  career politicians who are the cause of most of it.  It started during that last ’great’ depression, when FDR completely obliterated the Constitution by creating his “New Deal.”  This unconstitutional, massive expansion of government, was the first step down the road to our impending ruin.  Let’s get the government involved, and that will fix it correctly.  History has shown that the massive government expansion didn’t have anything to do with us getting out of the depression…but that’s another story.

The point is that America began to look to government to help them when they were down.  Instead of picking our collective selves up by our boot straps, America decided that government programs, handouts, etc. were the way to salvation.  And, who was there to feel our pain, but our “representative.”  What harm could come from a few dollars being taken from the producers, and given to the ’needy,’ anyway?

Now, almost 80 years later, we can see how much harm, has been done.  How does tens of trillions of dollars in debt and unfunded liabilities feel?  Do most people even understand what that means?  How does it feel to know that the government has infiltrated every aspect of our lives?  Does anyone understand what is happening?  And all under the guise of the government ’helping’ us.  It is sickening!  As the old saying goes, ’If someone knocks on your door and says, “I’m from the government, and I’m here to help you,” you’d better slam the door.’

Politicians have discovered an easy way to keep themselves in office.  Simply create more and more government dependents, and as this class of imbibers at the public trough grows, they have more and more voters who will keep re-electing them.  The few in Congress who might make the tough decisions to cut destructive welfare and entitlements, will be on the outside, looking in.  Look at what’s happened to Republicans over the past 30 years.  Republicans used to be the party of small government and individual freedom.  Because the ranks of government dependents has grown so large, Republicans have joined the tax and spend party, so they can get elected or re-elected.  Disgusting what power will do to one, isn’t it?  As Lord Acton said hundreds of years ago, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

Why not start a grassroots campaign to unseat every politician…except maybe Ron Paul?  Why not just start over?  It doesn’t matter whether you are a Democrat or Republican.  Just choose the other guy at the next primary.  If that doesn’t work, choose the non-incumbent in the general election.  In twenty years, the words of incumbent politicians would be oxymoron’s.  Maybe logic and common sense would begin to take hold in America.  It would surely be a start!
