Every law ever passed, which attempts to control people’s actions, in the name of religion, honesty, health, bad habits, or what have you, has failed miserably, and without exception. Be it gambling, prostitution, drugs, abortion, alcohol, or for that matter driving, all such laws were utter failures. Let’s examine a few of them.
1. When the 55MPH speed limits were imposed on America, back in the 1970’s, for no known reason other than to ’save oil,’ everyone violated them, because they were so silly and unreasonable. I am certain many hundreds of millions of dollars were collected by municipalities and states, because of violators. Today, we all drive five miles over the speed limit, and don’t get a ticket, because speed limits are sensible. 55 MPH wasn’t sensible, so hundreds of thousands of tickets were issued.
2. Alcohol. Prohibition was a total failure. It was signed, as the 18th Amendment to the Constitution, on January 16th, 1919, and for some strange reason, prohibited “The manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors,” but not drinking them! At any rate, America had a ball, violating the Volstead Act. Americans invented the “Speakeasy,” and “bootleggers,” made lots of money distilling and transporting “bathtub gin,” “moonshine,” and home brews of all sorts and concoctions. America drank far more during prohibition, than it did before. After prohibition was defeated with the 21st Amendment, we were stuck with the alcoholics, who got hooked having fun, defying the law. Futile attempt to legislate morality, which failed.
3. Drugs. Drugs have been illegal for over 80 years now, and more are consumed every year. The Mexican drug cartel, who kills people and cops with wild abandon, ships their stuff here for fools to inhale it, smoke it, or shoot it. It’s illegal, but that hasn’t stopped consumption, rather made it a challenge, probably. I’ve never done any of them, so have no idea of what kind of ’kick’ they may give, and don’t intend to find out. I want my mind to be whole. All the drug wars, jails full, and thousands of bureaucrats, cops, and special forces, haven’t made a dent in the drug consumption. Merely filled the jails! Dumb attempts to legislate morality, which never works.
4. Abortion. Now, that’s what is killing the Republican party. They insist on passing laws, and running on their opposition to abortion. I’m a Christian, and pro life, but that’s between me and my God, not between me and politicians. Against abortion? Don’t have one, and even campaign against them, but keep legislation out of it. Does life begin at conception or at birth? I have no idea, but I do know that you cannot legislate anyone’s ’morality,’ and if you do, you’re in trouble. What a woman does with her body is between she and her God, and is no one else’s business, and especially Congress’. Laws telling people what they can do with their bodies, are so idiotic and useless, that I simply cannot understand why, especially Republicans, insist on legislating them.
5. Gambling. Years ago, it was common for cops to arrest ’numbers men,’ who took bets on the daily ’number,’ which was arrived at by taking the number of winning horses or something like that anyway. Arrests were common, as were breakups of poker games. The states stopped all that by starting their own lotteries, which have a far lower chance of winning, than did the ’numbers.’. Both are rackets, designed to fleece those less intelligent, poor people, who can’t afford to lose, but they always have a glimmer of winning, which is absurd of course. Gambling has been around for thousands of years, and legislation to stop it is absurd.
Prohibition cost America heavily with corruption, made people drink ever more, and of course the FBI was formed as a result of it. The people who went to jail, and became addicted, is frightening and pointless. If there were no drug war, the weaklings would kill themselves, and we’d be rid of them, not counting the savings in prisons, and the tens of thousands of drug cops who try to confiscate and stop their trafficking. The 55 MPH speed limit was stupid, and in China now, a yellow light is the same as a red light. Think of the money collected because of a foolish law like that. If Republicans ever want to win an election, they’ll realize that a person’s body is theirs, and not government property.
Smoking kills. My Dad died of Lung Cancer. He started smoking at 15, and couldn’t quit. He quit when he died at age 63. I’ll be 79 1n ten days, and have never smoked. Not because it is illegal, but because I was raised not to smoke, and I don’t. I raised Melissa and David not to smoke also, and they don’t. Neither does Morgen. The cancer connection wasn’t discovered until 1965, believe it or not. America’s smoking population has declined by probably 75% or more, and there have been no laws to prohibit smoking. Why did smoking decrease? Because it kills! It also stinks. People want to live, and not die of lung cancer. Nicotine is the world’s most addictive drug, and I am sure it is difficult to quit, but but people want to live, and that’s really habit forming!
If cigarettes were illegal, can you imagine the black market on them? People would be growing tobacco in their basements, smuggling it, and maybe even enjoy violating an absurd law. People stop smoking, and don’t start usually, unless they are of the lower classes, because of intellect and self preservation. Lower classes and dumb kids who do smoke, will die early, but who cares? Same with drugs. If people kill themselves with drugs, who’ll miss them?
Prostitution is the world’s ’oldest profession.’ No one has ever been able to stop it, even though hookers are regularly picked up, fined, or put in prison. Why? Sex is so basic, that it can’t be denied! Why try? Confine it to certain areas maybe, with zoning, but the money wasted on picking up prostitutes and druggies, is mind boggling. Millions of guys take their girlfriends out on a date, or meet some gal, and hope to get her into bed by spending money on her. Is that prostitution?
Every day, the government and Federal Reserve, print millions of paper dollars, which are backed by nothing, and decrease in value and purchasing power, by the same amount that their numbers are printed, which is taxation without representation. We all use paper money with no real value. Why doesn’t Congress pass a law which controls spending, and bring honesty back to the dollar? That legislated morality would benefit all of us and put Colorado Gold out of business. Never happen. Our future is secure, unfortunately. Congress passes tens of thousands of other laws, in vain attempts to govern us and control us. They think nothing of destroying the dollar, and love to legislate morality. Destroying our money is immoral, but the D.C. Gang, thinks nothing of it. Taxation is theft, but theft in hundreds of ways besides endless printing of dollars. Phone bills have 29% added to them in taxes, as does every single thing we eat, buy, use, or make. Try to book a hotel, take a train or plane, or buy a gallon of gas or a new tire without paying exorbitant taxes. Can’t be done, because spending on pointless laws, regulations, and handouts to the worthless, is destroying our once grand experiment in freedom.
Isn’t there some way to separate Washington D.C. from surrounding lands, and float it down the Potomac, down the Chesapeake Bay, and out into the ocean? We could then use it for target practice and sink it! Just imagine 50 individual states, with no federal laws, bureaucrats, courts, regulations, handouts, taxes, or bureaucrats! 50 individual states, which would make their own laws, do no foreign, pointless wars, and compete with each other. Dream on reader!
P.S. If S & P is fined $5 billion for miss grading bundled mortgages, calling them ’triple a,’ and is responsible for millions losing their savings around the world, shouldn’t the victims be reimbursed, rather than the dollars going into the treasury?
