Government Schools

Anyone with eyes and ears realizes by now that government schools are an utter disaster on every level.  Every year we spend more and continue to lose ground to the rest of the civilized world.   Every year we continue to pass ?students? who do not produce passing work just so the school districts can keep their quotas up.  Every year there are more and more unruly and downright dangerous ?students? that are allowed to remain in school and disrupt classrooms.  Again, just so the schools don’t lose funding for not having x number of students in school.  Every year the teachers union spends hundreds of millions of dollars to elect democrats who will continue to support the status quo.  It’s just insane, and I’m so saddened and disgusted by what we’ve all created, or allowed to be created over the past 100 years.

My neighbors have a son who’s been teaching high school seniors for years, but he’s finally given up because he is not allowed to fail a student!  That’s right, his administrators will not allow it because the school district would lose their funding.  This same teacher was recently threatened with death by a student, who wasn’t suspended or jailed, but is now accompanied by the principle of the school each time the student attends the teachers class!  And not just accompanied to the door, but the principle actually sits in class for the entire period!  Is that just the nuttiest thing you’ve ever heard?  Instead of removing this low life from the school, he’s given an escort to class by the principle every day! You can’t make this stuff up folks!

Our local high school now has a police department on site!  That, and the normal array of metal detectors and other high tech security measures must make school feel like a prison for many of our kids.  And keep in mind that I live in the Madison, WI school district.  This is actually one of the better school districts in the nation!  Can you imagine what it’s like in the inner cities?  How did we get here?

Speaking of the Madison School District, we have two families in our small community that recently moved their 3rd and 4th grade kids from the local public elementary school to private school because the kids were not learning to spell or perform simple math!  Literally!  The teachers wouldn’t correct mistakes, and wouldn’t introduce basic concepts to their students.  When confronted by the parents, the administrators actually claimed that that the changes implemented by governor Scott Walker in 2011 caused many of the experienced teachers to retire, which lead to this lower level of teacher competence.  So now they have all these young, college educated, inexperienced teachers who are completely incapable of teaching?  HUH? Some of my kids’ best teachers have been right out of college! That is totally insane.  No, the administrators are holding our kids hostage because they are pissed off that the governor would actually require teachers and other union members to partially pay for their benefits.  If that doesn’t make your blood boil, I don’t know what would!

At the private school that my kids attend, there are three administrators for 300 kids, and everything runs very smoothly.  We’ve been very happy with our school from day one.  How does that compare to a public school?  Well according to a Rand study, there are roughly 4 times as many administrators in public schools, per student, than in private schools.  What do these extra folks do?  Clearly the schools aren’t safer or more orderly.  There is a major deficiency with regard to education as well.  So why do we continue to pay exorbitant taxes to support horrible schools? Here in Wisconsin, the average spent per student is almost $12K!  How is it possible that my kids can receive a much superior education for less than half of that?  I’ve asked that question of several administrators, but have never been given the courtesy of an answer.

I’ll bet that every one of us has a personal story about the utter lack of competency, and/or caring experienced at a government school.  And yet we continue to allow it.  Why do we stand by and let this cancer eat away at the core of our country?  Without educated, disciplined kids, our country has a very bleak future ahead of it.
