The Highway Trust Fund

Congress is all a twitter over passing a Highway Trust Bill.  This is the outfit which collects the federal gas and diesel taxes and supposedly disburses them to the various states and contractors to build roads.  The feds add a few billion to it each year, but I’ll guarantee you, that even with a few billion added, the result is typical federal government waste, fraud, payoffs, and gobbeldygook.  I’d be willing to be a Crispy Creme Doughnut, that the bureaucrats snuff up 40% of that money before they issue a dime for construction.  Here’s what I would do, and not a single Republican candidate has proposed it, and never will.  Try this on for size:  Leave the fuel tax as it is, only give it all to the states and let them maintain and build their own roads. Get rid of th entire federal bureaucracy dealing with the highway trust fund and associated bureaucracy.  Now isn’t that a radical idea?  It’s so damned simple, but no one has thought about it or proposed it.  Come on Donald Trump. I know you’ll never read this, but how about it?
