When something is so obvious and logical, why not copy it? This will be brief, but so obvious, that it takes but a few words to describe it. The U.S. Postal Service has been hurt by the internet. Why send a letter, when you can do it instantly and free on the internet? The Post Office has a deficit of billions of dollars a year. How to fix at least part of it? Why not copy Canada? In 1969, Canada stopped Saturday mail deliveries. Makes sense to me. Think about the possible savings, if the Post office were allowed by Congress to cease Saturday service. (Congress controls the postal service by Constitutional mandate). Mail personnel work five days a week, so the Saturday service means that an extra staff is necessary for the sixth day. Extra employees would only be needed for sick leave and vacations, not for an extra whole day. Think of the labor savings, gasoline and vehicle wear savings. Probably in the hundreds of millions of dollars a year. No one would be fired. As personnel retired, they wouldn't be replaced. All so simple. Banks in my area close at noon on Saturday, so even if you have checks to deposit, the date on the deposit will always be Monday, so why rush to a bank on a Saturday? Who would be inconveniences by no Saturday service? Very few I am convinced.
Canada has two coins, affectionately called "Loonies" and "Toonies." They are simply one dollar coins and two dollar Canadian coins. Their life expectancy is many decades, besides being very convenient. The U.S. has one dollar bills whose life span is maybe a few years or so. I haven't checked the official life span of a dollar bill, but looking in my wallet, I can't find one that's very old. Our dollar bills undoubtedly have a hundredth the life span of a "loonie." Our two dollar bills are rarely seen, but thanks to inflation, it is very common to have to use two – one dollar bills for a purchase. If we had a two dollar coin as well as a one dollar coin, common transactions would be a lot easier and faster, plus the savings for the Treasury Department would be astronomical. How about a 'Wonsie" and a 'Toosie?" It may make vending machines have to be revamped, but that would be their problem. I'd love to pocket 'wonsies and 'toosies' for my daily purchases. No more trying to get dollar bills into or out of one's wallet. Just a few small coins in your pocket for daily purchases. Great! How about a 'fivsie?" :Let Canada copy us.
