Trump and the Circus

It’s pretty obvious that the anti-Trump cabal has hit the jackpot with their special counsel in place.  Why do the Democrats seem to try to destroy the Trump Administration, which is obviously trying to do what was promised during the campaign, and what America voted for?  Trump gave a sterling speech and performance for the Saudis on Sunday.  Cheers for him!  Maybe his trip will salvage his detractors, because he certainly out shines Obama, who is spending millions on rentals and vacations.  Wonder where he got the dough? I’m sick of the D.C. swamp which Trump wants to drain, so I’m going to give you a film review.

Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey shows gave their final performance May 21st.  After 146 years, the big, wonderful circus will be no more.  Ringling Bros long ago gave up the ‘big top’ tent which was erected in medium and large cities.  When I was maybe 12 or 13, I got up early in Washington D.C. where I was born and raised,  took the Benning Rd. streetcar, and got off close to where the two – mile long trains had parked on long sidings.  I watched, absolutely transfixed, at the coordinated, well rehearsed actions of over a hundred men unloading the trains, and erecting the huge tent.  Yes, D.C. was a safe place for a pre-teen lad to take a streetcar early in the morning to not the best area of Washington.  I later went to the circus with my parents, and loved every minute of it.  It is part of America which has ceased to exist.  After the animal freaks succeeded in getting the elephants off of the program, ticket sales slumped, and maybe the lack of elephants spelled the difference between profit and loss, I don’t know.  The Ringling Bros circus had long ago ceased using the big tent, and gave the show in indoor arenas.

If you have even a slight romantic bone in your body, and have even a bit of romance in your soul, you must see one of Cecil B. De’Milles’ greatest achievements, “The Greatest Show on Earth.” It was made 67 years ago, and still is absolutely one of the best films ever.  In it, you can see in all its glory, the Ringling Brothers, and Barnum and Bailey Circus from the time the trains are unloaded, tent erected, and a complete show.  I watch it every time it appears on cable and even have a DVD of it, which can usually be found on e-bay if you want one.  Everything is there. All three rings, elephants, trapeze, clowns, horses, parades, music, and even Bing Crosby and Bob Hope briefly, watching from the grandstand.  It won Academy Awards, and the list of stars is huge.  Betty Hutton, Jimmy Stewart, and Charlton Heston are featured, and even the famous clown, Emmett Kelly.  The sawdust, drama, comedy, and suspense are all there.  You can see what future generations will miss, and what they have already missed not watching a circus in a huge tent.  Look for it, and by all means watch it.  I’m sick of the swamp this week.
