Let’s see now, The War Between the States, mistakenly called the Civil War, lasted about three years, and tragically killed 610,000 Americans. It was started by dishonest Abe Lincoln deciding to re-supply a fort in a harbor of South Carolina, who had seceded upon Lincoln’s winning the election. Lincoln was warned, but paid no attention. The South wanted no parts of Lincoln’s desire for a huge, all-encompassing federal government, which is what that war was about, not slavery. We have gotten what Lincoln wanted. Hopefully Donald Trump will reverse the disaster. I still cannot understand why Republicans worship Lincoln.
Then we had WW I, which was about over when Woodrow Wilson got America in it. That folly cost 53,000 American lives. 38 MILLION died in that war, which was started with one gunshot killing one man. Absurd. American participation lasted but a couple of years.
WW II started in 1939, when Britain declared war on Germany, who was trying to recover land and populations taken from it from the Treaty of Versailles, which ended WW I. That treaty got the world Adolf Hitler. Roosevelt was angry at Japan’s brutal invading of China, and punished it by ceasing to sell it scrap metal, prohibiting it from using Pearl Harbor, and blocking Jap ships from getting needed oil in the South Pacific. They retaliated by bombing Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941, which got us into it. Many say Roosevelt triggered the Japs to get us out of the ‘great depression.’ It did. England declared war on Germany for reasons like Roosevelt’s. Both ridiculous. America’s part in WW II, lasted less than four years and cost 362,000 soldiers’ lives, plus a couple of million injured, and 50% inflation. After that war, consumer prices were exactly twice what they were four years earlier. Many experts say America should have never entered that war, but at least we won. That was the last war America has won.
Truman got America into Korea, foolishly, and that cost America over 50,000 lives in about three years. We still have thousands of our troops there, for 70 years, which infuriates North Korea and the South as well. Bring them home. South Korea can easily defend itself.
JFK (Kennedy) was trying to avoid Vietnam, trying to bring home the few thousand American troops already there, but LBJ (Lyndon Johnson) ran it up from the White House ‘ready room’, and Vietnam escalated into a full-fledged disaster, costing America 59,000 lives…in about six years. Vietnam is communist now.
George Bush decided that America needed to go into Afghanistan, got semi approval from Congress, and our troops went into Afghanistan in 2001. Why? No one has the slightest idea, and especially troops who were there. Russia tried to tame Afghanistan, and after a few years realized it was a hopeless endeavor, went home, leaving millions of tons of arms, tanks, trucks, guns, etc. behind. Did Bush learn from the Russian mistake? Of course not, and after 16 painful, disgusting, costly, fruitless years, we’re still there, and Trump is even considering sending more troops there. Obama realized the hopelessness of it and removed tens of thousands of our guys. The car bombings go on regularly, and last week a biggie cost 90 lives and hundreds injured.
Afghanistan has no oil, gold, silver, or anything useful to anyone. Why are we there? To build schools? To fight the Taliban? Build roads? Civilize an uncivilized nation? Get even for 911, which Afghanistan had no part in anyway? Who cares a whit about Afghanistan, other than the military-industrial complex, which Eisenhower warned us to steer clear of? It’s a nonsensical war, and as Trump said during his campaign, Afghanistan and Iraq have cost six trillion dollars, and have resulted in nothing but endless frustration and far too many lost American lives.
Here’s a great idea President Trump: Follow the Russian lead and simply leave. Take with us all the stuff we can, all the troops, and COME HOME. All wars in history seem to have been started by politicians, rulers and dictators who want to increase their territory, power and wealth…at the cost of their subjects being killed and maimed. Thanks Vets who have fought so hard and with such dedication, but no thanks to our Presidents who are responsible for our entering them! Don Stott
